Check Valves And Their Types

The check valve's design makes it ideal mostly for pipelines to prevent backflow. By design, the check valve is a one-way valve, where the media flows only in the direction indicated by an arrow on the valve's body. Thus, any reverse flow is automatically prevented from protecting the other valves and pipelines. Such is the ingenuity of the check valve's design.

All check valves are automatic because, without their ability to block backflow instantaneously, incidences like water hammer can occur. A water hammer can be catastrophic and cause damage to the machinery, pipelines, and working personnel.

Check valve suppliers in Indonesia claim that nearly a dozen types of check valves are in the market. Although they work in different ways, they serve the same purpose, with the same functional capacity.

Oilway, Indonesia's top industrial valve supplier, manufactures high-grade swing check valves and lift check valves. The control mechanism in a swing check valve is a disc fitted on the top end of a hinge that allows it to move freely with the flow. Swing check valves are ideal for horizontal and vertical pipe layouts, as the configuration facilitates minimum pressure loss.

A lift check valve is similar to a globe valve but without the handwheel. The valve is capable of large fluid resistance and is mainly used for small bore applications.

Check valves and their common applications

Check valves are used in a countless number of industrial applications mainly because of their automatic operating mode. Their one-way directional capacity also gives them the names Non-return or One-way valves.

Some of the common applications are listed below;

  • They prevent water contamination by stopping the backflow or back-siphonage, common in hoses connected to kitchen sprays and shower hand sprays.
  • They are installed at pump outlets to prevent backflow from the outlet to the pipe inlet.
  • Check valves are essential for centrifugal pumps, which are not self-priming, to keep the water within the pipes.
  • Check valves are used in HVAC systems in large buildings where the coolant has to pumped up to higher storeys. Check valves to ensure the coolant does not flush back down due to gravity.
  • Check valves protect expensive equipment like water meters, pumps, and filters against possible damage or contamination resulting from a reverse flow.
  • It facilitates the pumping systems to restart smoothly by holding water in the pipe even after the flow is turned off.
  • It prevents cross overflow in systems with unequal line pressure, especially hot and cold water inlets in thermostatic mixers.
Check valves are ideal for complex multi-zone heating and booster pumps.

Industrial applications of check valves

  • Parallel pump systems

Multiple check valves are connected to parallel-connected pump systems to prevent the pump from pumping into the standby pump. It also prevents backflow from the discharge tank.

  • Emergency cooling systems

Check valves keep emergency cooling systems in control by keeping the head tanker always charged with water and allowing excess flow to drain into the suction tank.

  • Pressure relief systems

Spring-loaded check valves are used as relief valves in low-pressure gas applications. When the system pressure goes above the cracking pressure, the check valve opens and safely guides the released gas to a safe outlet or a flare header.

  • Water hammer mitigation

Water hammer is a common occurrence in pumping systems like drinking water distribution systems and wastewater treatment plants. In case of a pump failure, there will be a reverse flow, and the stronger it is, the more forceful the resulting water hammer. A spring check valve will lower the reverse velocity and lower the pressure rise during the water hammer.

Check valves are compact, lightweight, and easy to use, as they are mostly automatic. But like all other industrial valves, they must be installed, maintained, repaired or replaced only under the supervision of experts and controlled conditions to prevent any untoward incidents.
