A Comprehensive Guide On Globe Valves

Globe valves are valves with a linear motion that can regulate, start and stop the flow. It is designed to regulate up and down flow. The valve body has a disk and a seat where the disk moves up and down perpendicular to the seat to let the flow pass. You can remove the disk entirely from the path or completely close. The annular space created between the seat ring and the disk of the gate valve offers good throttling, which will regulate the fluid flow. The disk in the globe valve can be installed against or in the same direction of the fluid flow. In Indonesia, globe valve suppliers come up with innovative designs of disc and body. The globe valve disc comes in three different designs, namely,

  • Ball Type – The ball-type design starts and stops the flow in low temperature and pressure systems.
  • Needle Type – The needle type design is used when you need better throttling in different flow velocity.
  • Composite Type – This design uses a non-metallic ring for a better shut off.

Different Types Of Globe Valves

Based on the body type, globe valves can be categorised into three main types: Z type, Y type, and Angle type.

Z Type

It is the simplest and a commonly used type of valve. These valves have a z-shaped division inside the body within which the seat is placed. The seating arrangement is horizontal that allows the disk and stem to move up and down over the pipe's axis. However, it results in a high-pressure loss. Like in gate valves, the stem is placed within the bonnet. The bonnet is attached to an opening on top of the valve, and hence you can easily access the seat. The Z-type design is simple to manufacture, install and repair. It is mainly used in low-pressure systems where throttling is needed.

Y Type

This type of globe valve is used in high-pressure drop systems. In this design, the stem and seat are placed 45 degrees to the pipe. It is used in critical systems where a high-pressure drop is a concern.

Angle Type

Angle globe valves are used in systems where the flow has to turn 90 degrees without using an extra pipe weld and an elbow. These valves can easily handle fluctuating fluid flow and slugging effect.

Based on the body and bonnet connection, the different types of globe valves are:

Screwed bonnet – It is an inexpensive and the simplest option available for globe valves.

Bolted bonnet: It requires a gasket to seal the bonnet and the body. It is a popular design used in most globe valves.

Welded bonnet: This design is used in systems that do not require disassembly. It is lightweight when compared to other components.

Pressure Seal Bonnet: These bonnets are used in high pressure and temperature applications.

Pros And Cons On Globe Valves

Due to its short closing and opening stroke and efficient cutting, globe valves are most suitable for flow control. However, some of the other pros and cons of using a globe valve.
Pros

  • The shut off is clear and quick.
  • The throttling is moderate to strong.
  • It has shorter strokes compared to gate valves
  • Each type of gate valve has an exclusive ability.
  • The seats are easy to resurface and machine.
  • The valves are used as a stop check to see if the disk is connected to the stem.
  • It is easy to produce, design and maintains globe valves
  • It offers less friction, longer life and limited time to open and close.

Cons

  • It has a higher drop in the press as compared to other valves.
  • A head loss may discontinue the path of flow
  • It causes discontinuity and little obstruction due to head loss
  • It creates noise during the operation.
  • It is heavier than other valves and makes use of more poser to open and close.
