Industrial Gate Valves and Globe Valves

Gate valves and globe valves hold equal importance in the industrial world. They look quite similar because they have a similar external body. But the similarities end right there. Both valve types are different in their internal components and their operating modes. Gate valves are identifiable by their wedge-shaped disc, which moves upwards in the open position and downwards in the closed position. These valves are highly preferred in applications that require the free flow of media under little pressure. The globe valve belongs to the linear valve family, and its functions include starting, stopping, and regulating the flow of media. A tight, leak-proof seal makes the globe valve great for regulating high-risk media such as corrosive acids, chemical slurries, and high-temperature fluids. Globe valve manufacturers also recommend the same. Our article further explores the big differences between the gate and globe valve based on their design, applications, operating mode, and functions.

Gate Valves Vs Globe Valves

The design

The valve design for both valve types is one of the most obvious differences, which also sets the tone for operating. The gate valve is simple in construction and is primarily designed to be fully opened or fully closed during operation, and it most suitable for applications that require the same. In addition, the pressure drop is minimal in the gate valve because the gate fully retracts in the bonnet, and the flow is unobstructed, causing very little friction loss. Another difference is the non-rising stem within the valve.

On the contrary, the components of the globe valve are enclosed inside its body. Thus, the very design aids the valve to permit obstructions to change the rate and direction of the flow during operation. Thus, the globe valve is apt for applications that require a good throttling ability. The design, however, is a drawback because it contributes to a huge pressure drop and demands a greater torque for operating.

The applications.

The gate valve is a multi-directional valve and is most suited for applications that call for an unobstructed media flow. Gate valves are commonly used in water treatment plants, fire prevention services, domestic water distribution systems, etc.

The flow in the globe valve is strictly in compliance with the direction indicated on it. Globe valves are widely used in refineries, petrochemical industries, the oil and gas industry, offshore oil rigs, and wastewater treatment plants.

Mode of operation

The operating mechanism of a gate valve is designed to allow the disc to slide in between the seats to open the flow path in a highly non-linear fashion. When the gate valve is in the open position, the flow space is big as the valve cavity, as the gate fully retracts in the bonnet. Gate valves can be operated by a hand wheel, air-powered diaphragm, electric motor, or piston actuator. The flow of media can be in any direction, and it cannot be regulated in a gate valve.

Globe valves need greater power and torque to operate than gate valves. The closure element in this valve is called a poppet. When the valve is turned on, the poppet travels perpendicular to the plane of the seat. As a result, the flow is more controlled and can travel only in one direction. For repair and maintenance, the globe valve can be opened against high differential pressure right at the site. But a gate valve has to be removed from the piping system.

Other differences between gate valves and globe valves

The globe valves have a larger body and can handle pressure classes of ASME 900 and above.

The gate valve has a straight-through port without recesses except in the seating area. The bonnet and stem are designed to align with each other for a smooth operation accurately.

The yoke bush in globe valves is made from ductile alloy. They have a yoke sleeve in Class 900 and 1500 ratings.

In gate valves, the yoke sleeve is a long thread that can be removed without replacing the bonnet. In sizes of 150mm and above, the yoke sleeve is mounted on thrust bearings.

Globe valves feature a blaa-like disc or a plug-type disc.

The disc in gate valves is a one-piece cast flexible wedge that ensures tight seating for any pressure and temperature.
