The Butterfly Valve And Its Components

Like every other industrial valve, the butterfly valve is mainly used to regulate and control the flow of substances through a pipeline. The valve is a quarter-turn rotational motion valve characterised by a disc mounted on a rotating shaft. When the valve is in open position, the disc is rotated one-quarter of a turn to be parallel to the flow. In the closed position, the disc is positioned perpendicular to the flow and completely blocks the line. The parts of the butterfly valve: The butterfly valve is simple in make and comprises only four components.
  1. The body

The most common designs are the lug and the wafer body design engineered to fit between the two body flanges.

2.The disk

The disk is what gives the valve its characteristic name. It is the part of the valve that controls the flow and is equivalent to the plug, the gate, and the ball in the other valves. The disc varies in design as per the flow requirement, the sealing, and the operating torque.

3.The seat

The seat is designed to fit snugly between the disc edge and efficiently cut off the flow when the valve is closed. Made from elastomers or polymers, the seat is sealed to the valve’s body or pressed and locked in.

4.The stem

The stem is a one or two-piece split-stem design that is protected from the media.

The butterfly valves and their advantages

Butterfly valves have several advantages over other valves which make them a popular choice for industrial, commercial, and domestic use.

Easy to use

Large butterfly valves used for industrial purposes are equipped with a gearbox connected to the stem. Manual rotation of the gearbox handle ensures a complete closure and opening where the speed of the valve is also controlled.

Affordable cost

By design, butterfly valves are simple and require no more than four or five parts, all of which are easily procurable. There are two types of butterfly valves- the wafer type and the lug type. The former is considered more economical for industrial and domestic usage.

Minimum maintenance

Everyone wants a valve that does its work without any complications. The butterfly valve fits this criteria perfectly. Their reliability, reduced maintenance, minimum wear and tear, reduced operating time and costs make them a popular choice.

Compact size

Compared to other valves, butterfly valves are compact in size and require less space. The disc is lighter than the ball in the ball valve and requires less structural support.

Operational speed

As a quarter-turn valve, it is quick-acting and requires less time to open or close, even if it is actuated manually. They are completely air-tight and reliable for their low-pressure drop and high-pressure recovery.

Size availability

Although small butterfly valves are the preferred choice, they are available in large diameters ranging from DN 40 to DN 5000.

Applications of butterfly valves

Butterfly valves have been in use for a very long time and have been useful for several applications:

  • They are used for water supply in homes, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities.
  • They are used for water treatments and fire treatments.
  • Butterfly valves are widely used in chemical plants and oil industries, and power generation facilities.
  • They serve in high pressure and high-temperature water and steam services.
  • They are used in slurry, vacuum services, compressed air and gas applications.

Operating process of butterfly valves

Butterfly valves can be operated in three ways:

  1. Manually.
  2. Electrically.
  3. Pneumatically.

Pneumatic valves are very reliable and operate at high speed. They last long because there is reduced wear and tear, despite the high-speed operation.

Electronic valves are connected to a gearbox that signals when the valve closes and opens. A single actuated valve requires a signal only to open and automatically springs shut when the power is cut off. Double-actuated valves require a signal for opening and closing.
